John Mattison, MD

John is a physician innovator and recognized leader in digital health transformation, with a career spanning medicine, data science, standards development, and health policy. Board certified in internal medicine and critical care, he practiced across seven specialties and helped found UCSD’s LifeFlight and hyperbaric medicine programs early in his career.

John was appointed Chief Medical Information Officer at Kaiser Permanente, where he led the $3 billion digital modernization of clinical operations delivered ahead of schedule and $267 million under budget. He launched Kaiser’s first AI initiative in Del Mar and has been a global advocate for responsible and interoperable health technology. He founded the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), now a foundational international data standard, and has contributed to GA4GH, SNOMED International, proteomics ontologies, and the Human Immunome Project to advance global data sharing in precision medicine.

A published author and editor of a leading medical informatics textbook, John has written on emerging health topics ranging from digital reimbursement policy to Long Covid. In Washington, he has served on multiple federal advisory groups including the Digital Medicine Payment Advisory Group which helps determine how new technologies are evaluated and reimbursed.

John has mentored scores of entrepreneurs through Rock Health, CureX, and academic accelerators and has held board and advisory roles across health technology companies focusing on neurotechnology, AI, and immunology. He has keynoted internationally and continues to teach and guide technology governance as Resident Scholar for Responsible AI and Advanced Technologies at UCSD.

His current work centers on the intersection of neuroinflammation, neuroscience, and advanced data systems to advance the responsible use of AI in health.
